The New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse provides information about current and future events relating to family violence prevention and intervention. This includes conferences (national and international), hui, forums, seminars, workshops and news about international visitors to New Zealand who have a particular interest or area of expertise in the field or have made a contribution to the understanding of family violence.

Transforming Childhood Trauma: Connecting with Empathy and Compassion

Dr. Bruce D. Perry will explore the negative impact of chaos, threat, traumatic stress, abuse and neglect on children. Hear how these adverse experiences alter the child’s brain, and can result in enduring cognitive, behavioural, emotional, social, psychological and physical problems. Concepts of empathy and compassion will also be explored in relation to physical health, mental health and an ability to form and sustain loving and healthy relationships.
 
Dr. Perry will communicate the key facts, concepts and principles required when working with traumatised children in order to assist in their healing from traumatic life experiences. Interventions will be explored which include the incorporation of current neuroscience, clinical research and traditional knowledge. A discussant will also be invited to engage in a conversation with Dr Perry regarding the implications for practice.
 
Theory and research will be interwoven with case examples to assist attendees to further develop their understanding of:
  • The developing brain
  • The impact of abuse, neglect and poverty of experience
    The fear response
  • The therapeutic web
  • The place of hope, empathy and relationships
  • Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics

This knowledge is key to planning and implementing appropriate interventions when working with those who have experienced significant childhood trauma. This session will be relevant for a range of professionals including those in Child Protection, Family Services, Therapeutic Services, Out-of-Home Care, Schools, Youth Justice, Family Violence Services, Sexual Assault Services, Mental Health Services, Alcohol and Other Drug Services and private practitioners.

Every Piece Matters - Jigsaw National Conference 2010

2010 Global Domestic Violence Conference

This conference is set to be the largest gathering of community groups, government and non-government agencies (NGOs) who are all devoted to highlighting and showcasing successful programs with the aim of empowering people and workers in the field of domestic violence.  It will look at such issues as research, community programs, governmental programs and the dissemination of information to the whole community with the aim of empowering individuals and communities to take action.
 
The gathering extends a special invitation to Indigenous groups from all over the Globe to come and participate in the Gathering in KL.  Indigenous groups from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and East Timor have also been invited. Many of these countries have strong and powerful leadership in the areas of control and prevention of domestic violence. These groups have developed superb initiatives both within their countries and in their Indigenous communities.

Designed for an interdisciplinary audience including social workers, healthcare practitioners, police, legal and mental health professionals, this conference will provide up-to-date information on current issues in adult, adolescent and child maltreatment.

On November 17, 2010 there will be a one-day workshop by Natalie Zlodre MSW RSW on Responding Effectively to Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence (SA/DV) Clients with Complex PTSD.  On November 18 & 19, 2010 the keynote speakers are Joyce A. Adams MD, David Finkelhor PhD, and David Wolfe PhD. 

In addition to the keynotes speakers, breakout sessions will provide the opportunity to advance knowledge and skills in the field of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse and neglect.
 

Connecting Women, Respecting Differences

This conference will explore this theme of difference and strategies for connecting diverse women. The organisers are inviting proposals that engage with the often difficult dialogues that are encompassed within the conference theme of difference, diversity, and intersectionality. An invitation is also extended for papers, workshops, panel discussions, performances and artistic displays addressing other themes relevant to the work of the association — such as gender and work, pay equity, women's health, media representations, the body, violence against women, Maori, Pasifika and indigenous women’s issues, women and policy, women’s art, women’s resistance, and more.

  • Effective, safe pathways to responding to a disclosure
  • Practical implications for dealing with disclosures for clients and for you as a professional
  • Of the services available in your area for survivors and people working with them

Online Resource: An Introduction to Child and Adolescent Mental Health
An Introduction to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Online Resource has been developed by The Werry Centre Workforce Development Programme to serve as an introduction to the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary when working in child and adolescent mental health in New Zealand.
The resource is comprised of four courses covering:
  • developmental considerations in infants, children and adolescents
  • engagement strategies in child and adolescent mental health services
  • assessment strategies for working in child and adolescent mental health and
  • interventions used in child and adolescent mental health services.

Who is it for: This resource will be useful for practitioners who have recently started working in child and adolescent mental health, including Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Cultural Workers, Psychology Interns and others.
Cost:  Free of charge.
Duration: This resource is equivalent to 8 hours of self-directed study.

Preventing Violence Against Women : The Political Economy of Women’s Human Rights

The global elimination of violence against women is one of the key struggles and wishes of our age.  This half-day workshop explores the broader international political and economic context of violence and insecurity experienced by women and how political and economic empowerment can serve as a deterrent to violence.
 
Presenter  Dr. Jacqui True (PhD York, Canada) is Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Auckland and author of five books and numerous articles on international political economy, gender mainstreaming, and feminist research methodologies. Her current book project is The Political Economy of Violence Against Women (Oxford University Press, forthcoming). She has served as a consultant to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, the United Nations, the NZ Human Rights and Families Commissions. Her report for the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against women, its causes and consequences, on the political economy of women's human rights was presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2009.  This workshop is based on that report.
