hospital frontThe New Zealand Herald published a roll of shame in Saturday’s paper (10 December 2011), detailing New Zealand’s shocking child abuse record. The article details the latest Child Youth and Family Statistics, hospital admissions reports, and individual child abuses cases to paint the horrifying picture of child abuse in New Zealand.

In the year July 2010 to June 2011, CYFs notifications increased to 150,747 alerts, with the number of substantiated reports increasing 36 per cent from the previous year. Such increases in figures are sparking debate with Dr Russell Wills the Children’s Commissioner suggesting increases are due to improvements in reporting, and front line staff often taking a different view.

This article was published as "Suffer the children", NZ Herald, 10 December 2011, p.A10, written by Anna Leask.
