The Families Commission provides a number of funding opportunities for those working for the elimination of family violence in New Zealand.

 

Blue Skies Fund
The Blue Skies Fund creates opportunities for new work that promotes innovative ideas and approaches relating to the interests of New Zealand families. Successful applicants may apply for up to $15,000 to produce a written paper or report of a standard suitable for publication by the Commission. The value of the fund is up to $100,000 per year and there are two calls for proposals per year, beginning in March and August.

 

The Innovative Practice Fund promotes research on new ways of improving the effectiveness of family-based services. Emphasis is on projects that have a strong rationale and are designed to produce measurable improvement in at least one important aspect of family functioning. Successful applicants may receive up to $30,000: a maximum of $15,000 per year over two consecutive years is available. There is one annual call for applications beginning in May. The value of this fund is up to $100,000 per year.

 

The Families Commission Research Fund is intended for family-centred research that addresses one of a number of themes. Current themes are: family-friendly environments; fathering; intergenerational transmission; family asset; the impact of climate change on families in New Zealand; and families benefiting communities. Successful projects funded will include some in the $5,000–$75,000 range and a more limited number over $75,000. Projects may run for up to two years. There are two calls for proposals per year for this fund, beginning in May and November.

The HRC is the Crown agency responsible for the management of the Government’s investment in public good health research.  Its mission is ‘to improve human health by promoting and funding health research’.  The HRC invests in biomedical, clinical and public health research.  The HRC allocates funding through a contestable process to nine Research Portfolios, each of which has a strategy developed by an advisory group of experts and stakeholders in the area of interest.

 

The Research Portfolios relevant to those wishing to undertake research into Family Violence are:

• Mental Health and Neurological Disorders
• Injury, Impairment, Rehabilitation and Disability

 

Health researchers looking at Family Violence may find funding opportunities in the following:

• Emerging Researcher First Grant Awards
Available to provide research funds only, to support emerging researchers who are seeking to establish an independent career in health research.
• Career Development Awards
A Clinical Research Fellowship open to psychologists researching the area of abuse and enrolled to undertake a PhD or equivalent qualification. 
• Annual funding round
Project grants available for an individual or group of researchers working on a clearly defined research project.

A new research fund is now available for community organisations. The Lottery Community Sector Research Fund, launched by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2008, makes $1.75 million per annum available for community organisations applying to undertake research or evaluation projects relating to New Zealand communities. The Fund will strengthen the research capacity of community organisations and allow them to develop the scope and nature of the research they want to carry out themselves. The Fund will also be available to strengthen the practice of Maori-centred and kaupapa Maori research.

 

There are two stages for applications to the new fund. The first stage is to submit a Research Idea to be considered by the distribution committee. The committee will then invite its selected applicants to submit a Full Research Proposal. Applications for Stage one, the Research Idea opened on 1 May 2008 and closes on 1 July 2008.

 

Invitations to selected applicants to lodge a Full Research Proposal will be issued after the committee meets to make its selection in late August.

The Social Policy Evaluation and Research Committee, hosted by the Ministry of Social Development, oversees social policy research across all government agencies.  The SPEaR website aims to be a 'coordination hub', providing information for both the government and non-government social research and evaluation sector.  Social research news and events, and a bulletin, released quarterly, are available on the website. 

 

SPEaR is in the process of developing good practice guidelines for social policy research and evaluation around contracting, ethics, research involving Maori, and research involving Pasifika peoples.

 

The SPEaR Linkages fund provides awards for scholarships, exchanges, workshops and seminars.  Applications for this fund, with funding rounds three times a year, can be downloaded from the website.
