Slice of HeavenPresentersChristine Sangster and Students from South Wellington Intermediate School (SWIS)South Wellington Intermediate School received special commendation from the Race Relations Commissioner for positive contributions to race relations in New Zealand, for their song and dance performance 'Slice of Heaven' at the Interschool Stage Challenge, Wellington, 2005. The video of their performance tells the story in dance of a young Indian immigrant coming to terms with leaving his homeland and adapting to a New Zealand environment - making it his 'Slice of Heaven'. The performance opens with a colourful glimpse of India and then moves to the difficulties of the young Indian boy gaining acceptance in a New Zealand primary school playground. Moving through those issues they reached the point where both parties had a better understanding of each other; the new arrival felt New Zealand was his home and yet kept his essential Indian identity. The message is effectively told through the eyes of children who face these issues, using excellent performance, costume and choreography. SWIS came third in their night's Stage Challenge competition, ahead of many secondary schools. |
