This paper will report on a critical literature review and synthesis of research evidence on the discipline and guidance of children which was undertaken by the Children's Issues Centre (CIC) under contract to the Office of the Children's Commissioner (OCC). The review examined the influence of disciplinary practices on outcomes for children; factors which influence parental disciplinary practice (including culture and religion); children and young people's perspectives on discipline; international law and developments; and effective family discipline.

Kate Marshall, Anne Smith, Nicola Taylor and Megan Gollop are all from the Children's Issues Centre, at the University of Otago. They have a range of backgrounds including early childhood, education, counselling, psychology, law and social work.
